Silent Knots: Master the Constrictor Knot 🎥

Welcome to Silent Knots! 🤫🪢

In this video, you'll learn how to tie the Constrictor Knot - one of the most secure binding knots ever created. Simple, tight, and reliable, it grips like a clamp and is nearly impossible to loosen once set under tension. Perfect for bundling, securing, and fastening when an absolute hold is required.

What You'll Learn:

  • Step-by-step visual guide to tying the Constrictor Knot
  • How to dress and tighten it for maximum grip
  • Practical uses in sailing, rigging, and everyday applications

Description: The Constrictor Knot is a powerful binding knot formed by crossing a turn over itself and tucking the working end beneath the crossing. Once tightened, it bites deeply into the material beneath it, making it ideal for tasks like securing rope coils, sealing bags, or fastening items to spars and posts.

This knot's strength lies in its simplicity - it's compact, reliable, and holds even when the rope becomes wet or slippery. However, it can be difficult to untie after heavy loading, so it's best used where permanence is acceptable.

Why Watch? Silent Knots provides calm, clear, and detailed instructions to help you master practical knots used by sailors and craftsmen around the world. The Constrictor Knot is a must-know for anyone who values precision, control, and strength in their ropework.

Constrictor Knot - Dual-write transcript

Welcome to Silent Knots. In this lesson we tie the constrictor knot.

What you need

A spar or rail and a line that must grip hard and stay put until you cut or carefully work it free.

Step-by-step

  1. Make a clove hitch around the spar, leaving a long working end.
  2. Pass the working end under the riding turn to form the constrictor's extra tuck.
  3. Pull both ends hard so the hitch packs down and bites the spar.
  4. Dress flat - a constrictor that sits crooked will slip or jam worse than needed.

Voice-over summary

The constrictor knot is a binding hitch: strong grip, hard to untie after heavy load. Use it when you want the hitch to stay, not when you need fast release.

Common mistakes

  • Using it on a dock line you must cast off quickly - it can jam.
  • Under-dressing the tuck - the hitch behaves like a weak clove hitch.
  • Leaving long tails that catch props or winches.

Uses on board

Seizing a soft cover, temporary bindings on gear, and teaching why some hitches are 'set and forget'.

FairHelm limit

FairHelm judgment: excellent for bindings, poor as a primary mooring hitch. If you need release under load, choose another knot.

Common questions

Constrictor vs clove hitch - which for deck work?

Clove hitch for adjustable fenders and quick work. Constrictor when you need a binding that will not slip until you deliberately free it.

How do I untie a loaded constrictor?

Unload first if you can. Work the tuck open with a spike. Do not fight a jammed constrictor on a live dock line.
