Chartplotter and navigation display basics

Chartplotters on cruising yachts — charts, waypoints, AIS overlay, and backup navigation discipline.

Overview

A chartplotter combines GPS position with electronic charts on one display. It is the hub for waypoints, routes, AIS overlay, and often wind instruments on modern cruisers.

Core functions

Function Owner tip
Waypoints / routes Name waypoints clearly; export backup to phone
Chart updates Match chip or download region to cruising area
AIS overlay Confirm CPA/TCPA alarms are set sensibly
Alarms Anchor drag and shallow contour — test each season

Backup discipline

Paper chart + compass backup still matters when GPS jamming, display failure, or power loss occurs. See Baltic sea sailing guide for pilotage habits.
