Chartplotter and navigation display basics
Chartplotters on cruising yachts — charts, waypoints, AIS overlay, and backup navigation discipline.
Overview
A chartplotter combines GPS position with electronic charts on one display. It is the hub for waypoints, routes, AIS overlay, and often wind instruments on modern cruisers.
Core functions
| Function | Owner tip |
|---|---|
| Waypoints / routes | Name waypoints clearly; export backup to phone |
| Chart updates | Match chip or download region to cruising area |
| AIS overlay | Confirm CPA/TCPA alarms are set sensibly |
| Alarms | Anchor drag and shallow contour — test each season |
Backup discipline
Paper chart + compass backup still matters when GPS jamming, display failure, or power loss occurs. See Baltic sea sailing guide for pilotage habits.
