Constrictor Knot - Dual-write transcript
Welcome to Silent Knots. In this lesson we tie the constrictor knot.
What you need
A spar or rail and a line that must grip hard and stay put until you cut or carefully work it free.
Step-by-step
- Make a clove hitch around the spar, leaving a long working end.
- Pass the working end under the riding turn to form the constrictor's extra tuck.
- Pull both ends hard so the hitch packs down and bites the spar.
- Dress flat - a constrictor that sits crooked will slip or jam worse than needed.
Voice-over summary
The constrictor knot is a binding hitch: strong grip, hard to untie after heavy load. Use it when you want the hitch to stay, not when you need fast release.
Common mistakes
- Using it on a dock line you must cast off quickly - it can jam.
- Under-dressing the tuck - the hitch behaves like a weak clove hitch.
- Leaving long tails that catch props or winches.
Uses on board
Seizing a soft cover, temporary bindings on gear, and teaching why some hitches are 'set and forget'.
FairHelm limit
FairHelm judgment: excellent for bindings, poor as a primary mooring hitch. If you need release under load, choose another knot.
Common questions
Constrictor vs clove hitch - which for deck work?
Clove hitch for adjustable fenders and quick work. Constrictor when you need a binding that will not slip until you deliberately free it.
How do I untie a loaded constrictor?
Unload first if you can. Work the tuck open with a spike. Do not fight a jammed constrictor on a live dock line.
