Watermaker basics for cruising yachts

Reverse-osmosis watermakers on yachts — output, power draw, pickling, and when marina water is simpler.

Overview

A watermaker produces fresh water from seawater via reverse osmosis. Output is typically 20–60 litres/hour on cruiser installations — enough to top up tanks on passage, not unlimited showering.

Operating costs

Factor Notes
Power High DC draw — often run with engine alternator
Filters Pre-filter and membrane life depend on water quality
Pickling Chemical preservation when idle weeks — follow manual

When it pays

Long anchor-heavy cruises in remote areas justify complexity. Baltic summer with cheap marinas often favours tank + shore hose — see watermaker vs marina water.
