Online VHF first, then Yacht Crew — fitting training around work
Software engineer planning a sabbatical; needed licence prep and a first liveaboard without quitting his job first.
I started with FairHelm's online VHF course on evenings — structured modules, exam prep, and no need to travel until I was ready. Passing the SRC theory gave me momentum to book Yacht Crew the following summer in Sweden.
The liveaboard week was intense in the best way: phones away during manoeuvres, clear roles, and an instructor who answered "stupid" questions without making them feel stupid.
VHF online taught the rules; the boat taught when to break silence on channel 16.
I'm still employed full-time, but I now crew on club races and use the alumni network for date swaps when work moves. The certificate is not a fantasy — it is a step I can prove.
