Overview
This report summarises recurring survey findings for the Hallberg-Rassy HR 36 (production 1982–1997, hull #1 through approximately #420). It is based on published owner reports, brokerage listing descriptions, and FairHelm advisory practice. It is not a substitute for a full pre-purchase survey by a qualified marine surveyor.

Hull — GRP Osmosis
Frequency: Common on pre-1990 hulls.
The HR 36 was built with polyester laminate. Hulls from the early production run (1982–1988) did not receive osmosis-resistant vinylester skin coats as standard. Moisture ingress develops slowly but by the 2020s many older hulls show readings above 12–18% on a Tramex CME4 moisture meter.
What surveyors report: Pattern blistering in the boot stripe and lower topsides; occasionally extending to midships sections on boats kept in warm-water marinas for extended periods.
Cost of repair (Nordic yards, 2023–2025):
- Local treatment (spot grinding + epoxy barrier): €1,500–3,500
- Full hull treatment (strip, tent-dry, three-coat epoxy barrier): €6,000–11,000 for a 10.75 m hull depending on drying time required
Buyer action: Request moisture meter readings taken after haul-out, not immediately after a wash-down. Ask for any previous treatment documentation and the barrier coat specification used.
Deck — Core Saturation Around Chainplates
Frequency: Very common; present to some degree on the majority of surveyed hulls over 20 years old.
The deck coring (foam or balsa depending on production year) absorbs water through chainplate bedding compounds that harden and crack over decades. Standing rigging load cycles the chainplate flanges, accelerating sealant failure.
What surveyors report: Soft deck surface when pressed near chainplate exits; moisture readings 20–40% above ambient in core samples; interior staining on bulkhead faces adjacent to chainplate roots.
Cost of repair:
- Re-bed chainplates with Sikaflex 291 LOT or equivalent: €400–900 per pair (feasible as a DIY project with haul-out)
- Local deck core replacement (affected section, 0.5–1 m²): €1,200–2,500 at a Scandinavian boatyard
- Full deck recore: rare on HR 36 but if required, budget €15,000–25,000
Rigging — Standing Rigging Age
Frequency: Nearly universal on boats bought without recent rigging documentation.
The HR 36 production run ended in 1997 — meaning even the youngest hulls are approaching 30 years old. Industry practice recommends replacing wire standing rigging every 10–12 years; rod rigging every 15–20 years with annual crack inspections.
What surveyors find: Terminal cups (swage fittings or mechanical terminals) showing hairline cracks when inspected under magnification; wire lay showing individual broken strands at spreader contact points; turnbuckles with no date-stamped service record.
Budget for full replacement (10.75 m mast, standard sloop rig):
- Wire rigging: €2,800–4,500 (wire + new terminals, yard labour)
- Rod rigging: €4,500–7,000
Request service logs. If none exist and the boat is more than 15 years old — budget for immediate replacement and negotiate accordingly.
Engine — Cooling System (Volvo Penta MD21/MD22)
Frequency: Common on higher-hour boats (500+ engine hours).
The Volvo Penta MD21 and MD22 are reliable marinised diesels but suffer from neglected raw-water cooling circuits. The most common survey findings are:
- Heat exchanger zinc anodes exhausted — white crystalline deposits on hose connections signal electrolytic activity inside the exchanger.
- Impeller failure — raw-water impellers should be replaced every 200 engine hours or annually. Failed impellers shed rubber vanes that block the exchanger.
- Exhaust mixer box corrosion — cast iron or mild steel mixer boxes corrode from the inside; visible rust staining at the waterline exhaust exit on the transom is the first sign.
Cost:
- Impeller + zinc service (routine): €120–250
- Heat exchanger replacement: €600–1,200 parts + labour
- Exhaust mixer box: €450–900 depending on configuration
Electrical System
Frequency: Variable — heavily dependent on the refit history of each boat.
Original 1980s–1990s wiring is undersized by modern standards. Common survey findings:
- Panel overloads: Owners add inverters, electric windlasses, chart plotters, and refrigeration to circuits designed for navigation lights and VHF.
- No cable labelling: Wire runs in the bilge and behind liners are often unlabelled — surveyors cannot verify circuits without physically tracing each run.
- Battery banks: Lead-acid banks under 100 Ah total are inadequate for modern 12V loads; lithium retrofits without proper BMS documentation are a liability risk.
Buyer action: Ask to trace from panel to every circuit. Request battery capacity test results. Budget €1,500–4,000 for a professional rewire if the boat shows the above issues.
Seacocks and Through-hulls
Frequency: Critical inspection point on all HR 36 hulls over 20 years old.
Original Blakes bronze seacocks are well-made but require annual greasing and exercise. Boats laid up without exercising seacocks may have ones that appear functional but cannot close fully under water pressure.
What surveyors find: Seacocks that operate stiffly or not at all; bronze dezincification on older fittings (pink discolouration); hose connections with perished rubber and rusted hose clamps.
Cost: Replacement with Groco or Trudesign: €150–400 per fitting, yard haul-out required. Budget €2,000–4,000 for full seacock replacement on a typical HR 36 with 6–8 fittings.
Survey Checklist Summary
When inspecting an HR 36, prioritise in this order:
- ☐ Moisture meter readings — hull and deck around chainplates (after dry haul-out)
- ☐ Chainplate inspection — deck core softness test, interior staining
- ☐ Standing rigging — terminal inspection, service documentation
