From nervous guest to confident crew in the Stockholm archipelago
Marketing manager, first time on a yacht. Wanted structure instead of a tourist sail.
I had been on day sails as a guest twice — pretty photos, someone else on the helm. FairHelm's Yacht Crew week was the opposite: four students, one instructor, and I steered on the second day.
The Stockholm archipelago is unforgiving in a useful way. Short tacks, granite skerries, and mooring with wind on the beam — you cannot hide. What stuck with me was not a single manoeuvre but the briefing rhythm: weather, roles, what "good enough" looks like before we untied.
I stopped asking "will I look stupid?" and started asking "what is my job right now?"
I passed ISSA Yacht Crew in September. Six months later I joined an alumni weekend and helped a friend pick a first boat using FairHelm's HR 36 guide — still crewing, but with vocabulary I did not have before.
