Silent Knots: Master the Cleat Hitch🎥

Welcome to Silent Knots! 🤫🪢

In this video, we'll show you how to tie the Cleat Hitch, an essential knot for quickly and securely fastening a rope to a cleat. This knot is widely used in sailing and boating to secure dock lines and mooring ropes, making it a must-know technique for anyone handling boats.

What You'll Learn:

  • Step-by-step instructions on tying the Cleat Hitch
  • Key characteristics: secure, easy to tie and untie, reliable under tension
  • Common uses in sailing, docking, and securing watercraft

Knot Description: The Cleat Hitch is formed by wrapping the rope around a cleat in a figure-eight pattern, finishing with a locking half hitch. It ensures the rope stays firmly in place while remaining quick to release when needed. Its simplicity and reliability make it a staple knot at marinas and on sailing vessels.

Why Watch? Silent Knots is your go-to series for mastering essential knots with clear, distraction-free visuals. Whether you're an experienced sailor or just getting started, this tutorial will help you master a fundamental knot for safe and efficient mooring.

Welcome to Silent Knots. In this lesson we tie the cleat hitch - the standard way to secure a dock line to a cleat on a pontoon, finger, or deck fitting.

What you need

  • A cleat (horn cleat or similar)
  • A rope under moderate load (your dock line)

Step-by-step

  1. First turn. Lead the rope around the base of the cleat from the side nearest the load, so the standing part runs toward the boat or the source of tension.
  2. Figure-eight. Cross over the top of the cleat and wrap under the opposite horn, then back over the top - you are forming a figure-eight around the horns.
  3. Locking hitch. Finish with a half hitch: take a bight over the standing part and tuck the working end under itself so the hitch locks when the line loads.
  4. Dress the knot. Snug each turn so there are no crossed turns or slack loops. Under load the hitch should grip; when slack it should still release cleanly with a firm pull on the working end.

Voice-over summary

The cleat hitch is fast to tie and quick to cast off - that is why it is the default mooring knot in marinas. It holds under steady tension but is not a permanent binding knot; for storm lines many skippers add an extra turn or use a different finishing hitch.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong direction of first turn - the hitch can capsize under load.
  • Too few turns on large cleats - add an extra wrap if the cleat is oversized.
  • Crossed turns - reduces holding power and makes release difficult.

Uses on board

Dock lines, spring lines, fender ties to lifelines, and any quick attachment where you need reliable holding with fast release.
