Bonding and grounding on a yacht: words and stop signals for owners
How bonding differs from earth/grounding, what a surveyor looks for at the waterline and shore cable, and why ABYC is not an automatic EU/UK rule. Not an electrician ticket.
A rusting fitting at the waterline is not always about a worn anode, that sacrificial lump of metal on the hull: sometimes it is about electrics on board. You have to start with words - what bonding is, how it differs from earth/grounding, and which signs mean "a specialist from here."

Words: function before the label
In listings and forums bonding and grounding often sit side by side as if they were the same thing. For an owner, function matters more.
Bonding - conductors and straps that keep fittings, the engine, seacocks and other metal nodes near the same potential. The idea is simple: if the metals are not wandering relative to each other in potential, current is less likely to run through salt water and chew fittings. Bonding does not fix everything: it does not replace a correct anode, does not cure a leak, and does not make shore power safe by itself.
Grounding / earth - how the system relates to the shore protective conductor and to protecting people from electric shock. Here it is no longer only "metals among themselves," but where fault current goes and how the yacht meets the shore pedestal.
Name confusion in English texts is normal. The owner's working move: ask "what exactly is bonded" and "where is the safety path," not argue about a fashionable word. Insulation colour in someone else's video may not match your boat - lean on the diagram and a specialist, not on a colour from the internet.
What usually breaks in a buyer's head
- "I fitted a new anode, so the electrics are fine." No: an anode is a consumable; a broken bonding strap can live next to fresh zinc.
- "The manual says bonding, so that is the same as shore earth." Not necessarily: the functions differ even when the conductors sit next to each other on the drawing.
- "I'll retension the straps like the neighbour - safer." Without a meter and a diagram that is a lottery, not a repair.
Through a surveyor's eyes
On survey they look not for neat theory, but for pictures a buyer can miss over a weekend:
- Broken or oxidised straps - green-white corrosion on terminals, a hanging end, a trace that a bond once existed and tore off. For a buyer that is not "a wiring detail," but a reason to ask when and who last worked the bonds.
- Mixed metal in the water without clear protection - fittings, shaft, propeller, through-hull bronze/stainless nodes side by side. Whether an anode is present is one question; whether live bonding reaches those nodes is another.
- Odd traces at the shore cable and power inlet - heat, smell, corrosion around the inlet, homemade splits. That is already a talk about shore power and crew safety, not only "zinc on the keel."
- Waterline corrosion that one "old anode" does not explain - especially if the seller shows a fresh anode and the fittings still "bloom." Then bonding and shore power enter the conversation, not only the zinc shop.
An anode alone does not prove bonding is sound. If the surveyor writes about bonds or about traces at shore power - that is not pedantry about words, but a signal to look at the diagram and a specialist.

What people fit to cut risk
In berth talk two classes of solutions often surface - without brand ads and without "buy this."
Galvanic isolator - a device in the shore protective-conductor path that blocks weak DC currents from wandering between yachts and the pontoon, yet still passes current on a fault (when people need protection). It comes up when the boat sits often on shore power in a marina and galvanic currents through a shared earth are a risk. Selection and checking belong to an electrician on your diagram, not on a video.
Isolation transformer - separates shore supply from onboard supply galvanically: the yacht takes power through a transformer, without a direct metal link on the supply conductors to shore. It comes up where harder isolation is needed (long stays, sensitive corrosion, a berth or project requirement). That is already project and budget level, not "fit it over a weekend."
When which is apt: depends on the boat's scheme, pedestal type, how the shore cable is arranged, and what the survey report says. A marine electrician chooses with measurements and a diagram - otherwise an "improvement" easily becomes a new fault.
Rules across countries
ABYC references help as a language of ideas and as a way to read English checklists. They do not make your boat "compliant" with a European rule by themselves. Jurisdictions differ: what sounds convincing on a US forum may not match the flag rule, insurer, or marina where you lie.
There is no "everywhere like this" table here - such a table ages fast and lies easily. The working move: your boat's diagram + local berth/flag rules + a specialist. ABYC ≠ automatic proof of CE and ≠ a substitute for the local rule.
Stop DIY
Do not rewire bonds "like the neighbour" without a meter and an understanding of the scheme. Do not thicken bonding "by eye," do not cut the shore protective conductor "so it corrodes less," do not fit an isolator/transformer from an advert without a project.
An owner's eye for "what looks odd" is useful; insulation-resistance measurement, terminal torque, and rewiring belong to a specialist.
If survey already notes electrics - do not "tighten it yourself before the deal"; clarify scope with the surveyor and an electrician.
Boundaries
