RYA VHF practice vs our ISSA path

Free «RYA VHF practice» is not the UK SRC ticket. How the RYA RTC exam path differs from FairHelm free → course → ISSA - without crowning a winner.

Three browser tabs on the kitchen table: a "RYA VHF practice" quiz that feels official, a half-read note about doing radio "online," and a charter email that only says "SRC / VHF licence." The quiz score looks fine. The ticket is not the score.

Two honest forks sit behind that search - RYA Short Range Certificate at a Recognised Training Centre, or FairHelm's free → course → instructor exam → ISSA SRC stack - without crowning a winner.

In short

  • "Practice" search intent is real - a practice bank or free listen is not an operator certificate.
  • RYA SRC (UK-flag framing): course online or at a centre, then exam at an RYA Recognised Training Centre - written paper + practical VHF/DSC. Exam fee payable to the RYA; separate from the centre's course fee. As of the RYA course-finder page on 2026-09-10, that exam fee is £76.
  • FairHelm ISSA path: free VHFonline course → paid instructor exam → ISSA VHF/SRC when requirements are met. Finishing the course ≠ automatic ISSA issue.
  • FairHelm does not sell or proxy an RYA SRC. If you need the RYA ticket, you need the RYA RTC ecosystem.
  • Charter / insurer / flag acceptance: ask the base. No invented RYA↔ISSA recognition table here.

FAQ

Is online "RYA VHF practice" the SRC certificate?

No. Practice quizzes and free trainers measure how you hear and recall. The RYA Short Range Certificate is issued after you pass the SRC exam at an RYA Recognised Training Centre (written + practical). A high quiz score is not the ticket.

Where do I sit the RYA SRC exam - and what is the £76 for?

At an RYA Recognised Training Centre. The £76 (as stated on the RYA Marine Radio SRC course-finder page on 2026-09-10) is the exam fee payable to the RYA. It is separate from whatever the training centre charges for the course. Centres set their own course prices. Always re-check the live RYA page - fees change.

Does FairHelm sell or proxy an RYA SRC?

No. If your flag or base requires the RYA SRC path, book an RYA Recognised Training Centre. FairHelm's product stack ends in ISSA VHF/SRC (when you complete our path), not an RYA ticket.

How does FairHelm free → course → exam → ISSA differ from the RYA path?

Four layers: free listen teaches hearing; the full online course teaches procedures; the instructor exam checks calm answers; ISSA SRC is the association document. None of those layers is an RYA SRC. Details and the four-layer map: VHF online vs free trainer.

Will a charter base accept ISSA instead of RYA SRC?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no - it is the base, insurer, and flag that decide, not a blog table. Ask them what document they want for your booking before you buy either path. We do not invent a country-by-country recognition matrix.

Is a free trainer enough, or do I need the full course?

The free track is an honest hearing gap check - not a certificate and not RYA mock. If you already know you need structured prep toward exam / ISSA, go to the full course. If you specifically need RYA SRC, plan the RTC exam - do not treat FairHelm free as that ticket.
