Contest 59CS

The Contest 59CS card is for a buyer who read "3 cabins" on SailWiki and decided they already knew the layout. Context, in summer and autumn 2024, writes otherwise: with the 59CS the Contest range gains the option of a fourth cabin or a workshop, so two boats with the same hull can carry a different number of berths.

The hull is the same in both sources. In the Context tables and on the SailWiki page opened on 25 October 2026, length including bowsprit is 18.52 m, beam 5.12 m, standard-keel draft 2.63 m and displacement 27,300 kg. They diverge only on cabins. Context explains where the aft space comes from: the tanks sit on the centreline, and the generator and batteries sit under the saloon floor. That is how judel/vrolijk & co keep weight low and amidships, leaving the stern free for the option the magazine calls an additional aft cabin with bunk beds. The directory does not show that fork and prints a single figure.

So "three cabins" in a listing is not yet an answer. It is a question: is the base layout fitted on this hull, or has the aft compartment been given over to a workshop? If the stern photographs do not settle it, the next step is a listing review. There is no dated yard invoice for a year of owning this model, so the card prints no annual sum.

Designhistoria

The hull figures come from two tables on the "The 59CS" pages in the Contest yard magazine Context for summer and autumn 2024 (publications.contestyachts.com, opened 25 October 2026). The first table gives length including bowsprit 18.52 m, waterline 15.50 m, beam 5.12 m, displacement 27,300 kg, standard-keel draft 2.63 m and mast height above the waterline 27.31 m. The second: mainsail 102 m2, 112% genoa 85 m2, fuel 931 litres, water 903 litres, Volvo Penta engine at 110 kW and 150 hp. Neither table prints ballast. Per Context, the interior was drawn by Wetzels Brown Partners, and the hull is built under Lloyd's supervision.

The earliest document is the Contest Yachts announcement of 30 July 2020, reprinted on Sail World Cruising. There stand the same 18.52 m, 5.12 m, 27,300 kg and 2.63 m, the same 27.31 m mast, and the same sails and tanks. It also prints standard-keel ballast, 10,400 kg, and a Volvo Penta at 110 kW but 149.7 hp. That list has no waterline. The partners named are the same: judel/vrolijk & co and Wetzels Brown Partners. The announcement says the first hull is already sailing and the second and third are ordered. That is the yard's position in July 2020, not a series total, so the card carries no count of hulls built.

The NauticExpo card places the 59CS after the Contest 57CS: a longer boat with a nearly plumb stem, in three- and four-cabin layouts. On 25 October 2026 the page itself returned 404, and those lines were checked against a search snapshot of the same address, so nothing more is said here about the bow than in the announcement and on this card. The current model range on contestyachts.com does not show the 59CS: it lists 42-56 and 63-85, and /model/59cs returns the general list.

The passport stores only cells where the Context table and SailWiki print the same figure: length 18.52 m, beam 5.12 m, draft 2.63 m and displacement 27,300 kg. The keel is recorded as fixed: the yard writes "draft standard keel", SailWiki writes Fixed. The waterline 15.50 m appears only in the Context table, not in the 2020 announcement or on SailWiki, so that cell stays empty. Ballast 10,400 kg appears only in the announcement, so that cell stays empty too. 149.7 and 150 hp stand side by side and are not averaged.

SailWiki also prints fibreglass, CE category A and the period "2020 - now". The Context tables have none of those cells, so material, category, designer and years are not copied into the passport. A check against a third directory failed: boat-specs.com returned Error on 25 October 2026, and sailboatdata.com returned 403.

Köparfrågor

How many cabins does the Contest 59CS have?

It depends on the hull. SailWiki, opened on 25 October 2026, prints 3 cabins. Context, in summer and autumn 2024, calls the 59CS the first size in the range where you can order a fourth cabin with bunk beds aft, or a workshop in its place. The tanks sit amidships and the generator and batteries sit under the saloon, so the stern stays free for that option. How many cabins a given boat has shows only in its aft compartment.

Why is the waterline empty in the passport?

The figure 15.50 m appears only in the Context 2024 table. The Contest Yachts announcement of 30 July 2020 and SailWiki print no waterline. Without a second source printing the same figure, the passport leaves the cell empty.

Why is ballast empty?

Only the announcement of 30 July 2020 gives 10,400 kg for the standard keel. The two Context tables and SailWiki print no ballast. A figure from one document stays in the card text and does not move into the passport.

What does the model passport store?

Length 18.52 m, beam 5.12 m, draft 2.63 m, displacement 27,300 kg and a fixed keel. Waterline, ballast, hull material, designer and years are empty. There is no count of hulls built: the 2020 announcement only says the first hull is sailing and the second and third are ordered.

Årliga ägarkostnader

There is no dated yard invoice for a year of keeping a Contest 59CS in the bank. The card does not print an annual sum.

Ask for a berth price against the 2.63 m draft and the 27.31 m mast height above the waterline from the Context 2024 tables. Insurance and service follow this hull: how many cabins it has and whether the stern holds a workshop, not the "3 cabins" figure from a directory. The engine in the Context tables is a Volvo Penta at 110 kW, and service follows the plate on board.

Calculators for this boat

Indicative figure for weekend use. The country supplies berth and winter. The insurance line stays the Swedish planning band - not a Danish, German, or Dutch premium. Maintenance stays Swedish too. Not a marina quote.

Checklista före köp

  1. Open the aft compartment and count the cabins. Context 2024 describes a fourth cabin with bunk beds or a workshop aft; SailWiki prints three cabins. What matters is what stands on this boat.
  2. Check the berth count in the listing against what you saw aft. "Three cabins" in a listing may mean a workshop sits where the fourth cabin would be, not that the option was never taken.
  3. Check that the tanks sit amidships and the generator and batteries sit under the saloon floor, as Context writes. If they were moved, the stern needs a separate question.
  4. Check length 18.52 m, beam 5.12 m, draft 2.63 m and displacement 27,300 kg. A different figure in a listing is a reason to ask for this hull's own papers.
  5. Do not write waterline 15.50 m or ballast 10,400 kg into the model passport only because one document prints them. Each of those figures has only one source.
  6. Do not treat "hulls 2 and 3 ordered" from the announcement of 30 July 2020 as a count of boats built. That is the order book on that date.

A mistake in the cabin count costs more than the other points. The survey list, the berth price and the insurance will have been set for a layout that may not be aboard, and the deposit is already gone.
