Wind instrument

Wind instruments on sailing yachts: masthead sensors, calibration, survey checks, and FairHelm limits on trusting stuck apparent-wind numbers.

ما هذا

A wind instrument is a sensor and display system that reports apparent wind speed and angle, usually from a masthead transducer, sometimes with true-wind calculation when boat speed is available.

Anchor

Cups, ultrasonic heads, and vertical wind vanes all appear on boats FairHelm sees. Lightning, bird strikes, and seized bearings leave sticky needles or frozen digital values. Autopilot wind mode is only as honest as this feed.

FairHelm judgment

FairHelm judgment: seized cups, 180-degree alignment errors, and displays that never change in a shifting breeze are survey items. A pretty cockpit gauge does not prove the masthead unit turns freely. Check on deck or aloft notes if age is high.

Limits

We do not invent calibration degree tables here. True-wind maths need a working log. Use the installer or surveyor for that network.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Q: Is apparent wind enough for autopilot?
A: Wind mode uses the instrument feed. Bad alignment makes bad steering.

Q: Do ultrasonic heads need no service?
A: They still need power, alignment, and clear heads. Birds and ice happen.

Q: Can I diagnose from the cockpit alone?
A: Stuck numbers yes. Alignment often needs a known breeze and compass check.
