SRC radio certificate for sailing charter: when you need it

I already had SBF and SKS in my head and thought: "radio somehow on the water." Then the base asked in a separate line for VHF / SRC - and it became clear: the sail document and the radio document are two different columns. Below - when SRC is usually needed, what it is not, and why free VHF does not close the line in a charter contract.

• SRC - Short Range Certificate; in German overviews also "beschränkt gültiges Funkbetriebszeugnis" - a Funkzeugnis for coastal marine UKW/VHF (with DSC in GMDSS logic).
• A sail Schein (SBF / SKS) does not replace a radio document, and vice versa.
• Many charter bases ask for a radio certificate separately; the written reply from the operator decides.
• UBI - for inland Funk; LRC - the longer-range marine layer; do not confuse with SRC.

What SRC is

Per ADAC-style overviews, SRC is an internationally recognised Funkzeugnis for taking part in mobile marine radio traffic in the coastal zone (texts often cite an orientation of about ~35 nautical miles from shore; farther out people usually talk about other equipment and LRC). It is about working a UKW set and distress/safety procedures - not about whether you can hoist a mainsail.

In German guide logic, SRC is often tied to "there is UKW on a pleasure craft and you want to take part in Seefunk." Exact duties depend on flag, area, and current rules - do not read this article as "mandatory everywhere."

Age of admission and "do you need SBF to sit SRC" are usually separated from the sail exam in school overviews: the radio path is not equal to SBF See. Check with the examining body / school.

A course before the exam is not mandatory in the overviews: you can prepare alone, but many go to a school to touch a set with their hands. The exam is usually split into theory and practice; in the German format there is often a listening/translation block in English. That reinforces a simple point: buying a course ≠ automatically getting a Funkzeugnis - a separate check still sits ahead.

When charter asks for radio

Three different conversations again:

1. Sail / skipper papers - SBF, SKS, ISSA, ICC...
2. Radio - SRC or an accepted equivalent.
3. Experience and crew - what the base and insurer are willing to release.

A forum line "my sail paper was enough" does not cancel a refusal if the base terms list VHF on its own line. Contract and base checklist wording varies: "SRC", "VHF certificate", "radio licence", "SRC or equivalent". The meaning is one - they want a radio document they recognise, not "I did the free trainer."

Working move: send scans before payment and ask explicitly: "do you accept our radio document / which equivalent is OK?" The written reply from the operator (and insurer) decides - not this article. Course / exam / certificate figures live on the course and certificates pages; they can change. A FairHelm course does not print ISSA automatically "after paying for a module."

German exam-board SRC and ISSA SRC are different paths to a "radio paper." Which your base accepts - ask in writing; do not argue with the marina using a quote from this article.

How this meets sailing Scheine

• Do you need SRC if you have SKS? Often yes - different skills and different documents; whether the base requires it - see charter terms and the operator's written reply.
• Do you need SRC for a Charterschein on a German river? Usually a different story (inland / UBI / rental terms).
• Can you "close radio" with only the free trainer? No, if the base needs a document.

FAQ

Is SRC the same as a sail certificate?

No. SRC is a Funkzeugnis. SBF/SKS/ISSA Inshore are about handling and role on the water.

Is SRC mandatory on every charter?

No universal "everywhere." Bases in popular areas often ask for a radio document or equivalent. The written reply from the operator and insurer decides.

Is FairHelm Free VHF = SRC?

No. Free = listening practice. The certificate is a separate path (layer breakdown).

How does SRC differ from UBI?

SRC - coastal marine layer in the overviews; UBI - inland. Do not substitute one for the other.

Do you need SBF to sit SRC?

In typical overviews the radio exam is not equal to a sail Schein. Confirm admission with the school / board.
