Emergency tiller basics on wheel-steered yachts

Finding, fitting, and steering with an emergency tiller when autopilot or wheel steering fails.

Overview

Most wheel-steered cruisers hide an emergency tiller that engages the rudder stock when hydraulic or cable steering fails. Many owners never practice — first use in a seaway is the wrong time to learn.

Before you need it

Step Action
Locate Find tiller, pin, and access panel — photo location for crew
Fit Practice in calm water annually
Secure Pin must fully engage splines — partial fit strips rudder
Steer Short tiller = high force — assign strong crew on helm

When steering fails

  1. Heave-to or reduce sail while fitting tiller
  2. Disable autopilot clutch per manual
  3. Call for assistance if rudder stock itself is damaged — tiller won't help
