Bronze seacock

Bronze seacocks on yachts: why the alloy matters, seize and dezincification clues, and FairHelm survey checks below the waterline.

Qué es

A bronze seacock is a marine valve, typically on a thru-hull, cast or machined from copper alloy chosen for seawater service below the waterline.

Anchor

Nordic yards still meet bronze and DZR-style fittings. FairHelm also sees mixed stainless or composite conversions and seized handles after winters ashore.

FairHelm judgment

FairHelm judgment: a seacock that will not close, a cracked flange, or green powdery corrosion is a hard survey item. Pretty bilge photos do not replace a handle test.

Limits

We do not invent alloy life percentages. Water chemistry, bonding, and winterisation change outcomes. Confirm the alloy claim on the part in front of you.

Preguntas frecuentes

Q: Is every yellow metal seacock true bronze?
A: No. Labels vary. Ask for alloy marks and surveyor reading.

Q: Can I leave seacocks open all winter ashore?
A: Follow yard practice. Seized handles after dry storage are common survey finds.

Q: Is stainless always better than bronze below the waterline?
A: Not automatically. Material, design, and installation must match the duty.
