Deck core
Deck core on sandwich yacht decks: wet core signs, survey checks, and FairHelm limits on guessing repair cost from soft spots alone.
Qué es
Deck core is the lightweight sandwich material (often balsa or foam) between inner and outer skins of a cored deck or coachroof.
Anchor
Hardware fasteners, stanchion bases, and windlass bolts are classic leak paths into core on Nordic boats. FairHelm pairs moisture mapping with sounding and, when justified, exploratory openings.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: soft decks underfoot are price and repair scope items. Fresh non-skid paint can hide wet core. Do not accept "cosmetic only" without moisture context around fittings.
Limits
We do not invent euro-per-square-metre repair averages. Scope ranges from local plug repairs to large recores. Surveyor and yard quotes rule.
Preguntas frecuentes
Q: Is every cored deck a defect?
A: No. Sound core is normal construction. Wet core is the problem.
Q: Can a moisture meter alone condemn a deck?
A: It guides. Sounding and openings may follow clustered highs.
Q: Does teak over core change the picture?
A: Yes. Teak fasteners add leak paths. See also teak-deck.
