EPIRB (distress beacon)

EPIRBs on yachts: 406 MHz distress beacons, registration and hydrostatic mounts, and FairHelm survey checks beyond a red plastic case in a photo.

Qué es

An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is a 406 MHz distress beacon registered to a vessel that, when activated, alerts search-and-rescue via satellite, often with GPS position and a hydrostatic release option for float-free mounts.

Anchor

Serious coastal and offshore Nordic boats often carry a float-free EPIRB. FairHelm looks for a current registration card, battery or service expiry, and whether the unit can actually float free without snagging.

FairHelm judgment

FairHelm judgment: an unregistered or expired EPIRB is a false comfort. Pair it with VHF DSC and a plan, not as the only safety layer. Photo of a red case is not proof of registration.

Limits

We do not replace flag or GMDSS carriage rules here. Registration databases and renewal cycles change. Confirm with your flag authority and maker.

Preguntas frecuentes

Q: Is an EPIRB the same as a PLB?
A: No. EPIRBs are typically vessel-registered and often float-free. PLBs are usually person-registered and carried on the body.

Q: Does GPS inside the EPIRB matter?
A: GPS-equipped units speed location. Still register and maintain the beacon.

Q: Can I test an EPIRB anytime?
A: Use only the maker self-test. Live transmission without cause is illegal and wastes rescue resources.
