Packing gland
Packing glands on shaft-drive yachts: packing rings and adjustment, FairHelm drip and heat checks, and how this differs from the full stuffing-box assembly story.
Qué es
A packing gland is the adjustable gland and packing rings that compress around a propeller shaft to control leakage. On many boats it is the wearing heart of a traditional stuffing box.
Anchor
FairHelm separates packing condition from dripless conversions. Nordic shaft boats still show overtight packing after owners chase a dry bilge photo.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: scorched packing, zero drip underway, and seized gland nuts are survey items. Packing is a service part, not a set-and-forget seal.
Limits
We do not invent a universal drip count. Follow the shaft seal maker and the surveyor on that installation. See also stuffing-box for the full assembly context.
Preguntas frecuentes
Q: Is packing gland identical to stuffing box?
A: Closely related. Packing gland stresses the rings and nut. Stuffing box often names the whole assembly.
Q: How often must packing be replaced?
A: When heat, leakage, or wear demand it. There is no single calendar for every boat.
Q: Can I switch to dripless without survey notes?
A: Conversions need bellows and water-feed checks. Document the change.
