Diesel fuel polishing and tank hygiene

Fuel polishing loops, biocide, and filter strategy for marine diesel tanks on cruising yachts.

Overview

Diesel bugs and water in the tank cause filter clogging and injector faults. Fuel polishing circulates fuel through a water separator and fine filter outside the engine — often installed as a permanent loop or portable service.

Prevention stack

  1. Keep tanks full in lay-up — reduces condensation
  2. Primary filter with water trap — drain weekly in season
  3. Biocide — only when contamination confirmed; follow manufacturer dose
  4. Polishing — after bad fuel purchase or before long passage

Symptoms

  • Engine surges under load
  • Black sludge in pre-filter bowl
  • Hard start after weeks idle
