LOA and LWL
LOA versus LWL on sailing yachts: definitions, marina and performance uses, and FairHelm caution on mixing figures in ads.
מה זה
LOA (length overall) is the maximum length of the hull as defined for that measurement rule. LWL (length waterline) is the length of the hull at the waterline in a stated loading condition.
Anchor
Brokers sometimes quote LOA including pulpits or bowsprits inconsistently. FairHelm compares model pages and marina bills carefully and prefers stated definitions over round marketing metres.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: never mix LOA and LWL when comparing speed ratios or berth price. Ask which figure a fee uses. Overhangs change marina cost and docking feel without changing LWL much.
Limits
Exact measurement rules differ (ISO, class, builder). We do not replace a measurer. Use consistent sources when comparing two boats.
שאלות נפוצות
Q: Is LOA always longer than LWL?
A: Usually on sailing yachts with overhangs. Read the stated definitions.
Q: Which length do marinas bill?
A: Often LOA or berth length rules. Ask the marina; do not assume LWL.
Q: Which length enters hull-speed estimates?
A: Waterline length. See formulas library for hull speed.
