Radar reflector

Radar reflectors on sailing yachts: passive visibility, mount checks, survey limits, and FairHelm caution against treating a tube as a collision guarantee.

מה זה

A radar reflector is a passive or active device that increases a small craft's radar cross-section so other vessels' radars are more likely to paint the yacht.

Anchor

Octahedral tubes and lens-type units in the rigging are common on boats FairHelm sees. Mounting height and orientation matter. Active RTE units appear on some refits. Reflectors complement, not replace, lookout, AIS when fitted, and COLREG duties.

FairHelm judgment

FairHelm judgment: missing, crushed, or hanging-horizontal "ornaments" that never present a proper face are survey talking points. A reflector in a locker photo is not a fitted safety item. Do not treat any reflector as a collision-avoidance guarantee.

Limits

We invent no detection-probability percentages. Sea state and other radar settings dominate. Seamanship still rules.

שאלות נפוצות

Q: Does AIS replace a radar reflector?
A: No. Different sensors. Many crews carry both when risk and rules suggest it.

Q: Is any mount height fine?
A: Higher and clear of clutter usually helps. Follow maker mounting notes.

Q: Are active reflectors always better?
A: They can help when powered and approved for the fit. They add failure modes. Check the specific unit.
