Winterisation
Yacht winterisation in Northern Europe: systems drain and protect, survey questions, and FairHelm limits on assuming a yard sticker means full layup quality.
מה זה
Winterisation is the set of layup steps that protect engine, plumbing, batteries, and interior from freeze damage and damp during cold storage ashore or afloat.
Anchor
Baltic and North Sea owners FairHelm advises typically combine antifreeze in engines and raw-water paths, drained or protected tanks, battery care, and moisture control under covers or shrink-wrap. Yard packages vary widely in what they actually include.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: treat "winterised" as a claim to unpack. Ask for a checklist: engine antifreeze, seacock state, dehumidifier or heat, and whether fresh-water systems were drained. A shrink-wrap photo alone does not prove the engine was protected.
Limits
We do not invent a single universal checklist for every climate and engine. Follow maker manuals and the yard contract for that boat. This page is not a substitute for a named mechanic.
שאלות נפוצות
Q: Is ashore always safer than afloat?
A: Different risks. Ice and chafe afloat; support and drying ashore. Neither is automatic safety.
Q: Does shrink-wrap equal full winterisation?
A: No. Wrap is weather skin. Systems still need separate work.
Q: Can I skip antifreeze if the boat is in a heated hall?
A: Only if temperatures and systems truly stay safe. Confirm the hall and the systems, do not assume.
