Forestay
Forestay on sailing yachts: headsail support, furler load path, survey flags, and FairHelm limits on photo-only condition claims.
Vad det är
A forestay (headstay) is the forward standing-rigging stay that supports the mast from the stem or bowsprit and usually carries the headsail hank or furling foil.
Anchor
Most used Nordic cruisers FairHelm sees run a furling foil on the forestay. Load concentrates at the stemhead, toggle, and upper swivel. Chainplate and stem corrosion matter as much as the wire.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: loose toggles, cracked stem fittings, and furler foils that bind are survey items. A clean headsail photo does not prove the forestay terminal is sound. Ask for rigging age and any stemhead work notes.
Limits
We do not invent tension percentages or claim one foil brand never fails. Condition depends on tune, corrosion, and past grounding. Use a rigger and surveyor for that boat.
Vanliga frågor
Q: Is the forestay the same as the furler?
A: No. The forestay is the stay. The furler rides on or around it. Both must work.
Q: Can I replace only the wire and keep an old foil?
A: Often yes, but check foil wear and swivels. Do not assume the foil is forever.
Q: Does a new genoa prove the forestay is new?
A: No. Sail age and stay age are separate.
