Dinghy davits

Dinghy davits on yachts: stern lifting gear, deck load survey points, and FairHelm limits on treating bolted arches as proof of sound laminate.

Що це

Dinghy davits are stern lifting arms or an arch system that raise, lower, and often store a tender clear of the water, usually with tackle or electric winches.

Anchor

Many Scandinavian cruisers carry davits or a bathing-platform lift. FairHelm checks backing plates, corrosion at pins, cable condition, and whether the dinghy weight matches the rated gear.

FairHelm judgment

FairHelm judgment: davits concentrate load on the transom and deck. Soft core, cracked gelcoat at feet, and undersized electrics are negotiation points. A tidy dinghy photo does not prove the structure underneath.

Limits

We do not publish safe working loads for every brand. Check maker plates and yard notes. Ocean passages may need the dinghy lashed differently than harbour mode.

Часті запитання

Q: Are davits better than towing a dinghy?
A: Safer and dryer in many coastal trips. Towing still happens. Match sea state and speed to the method.

Q: Can davits damage the transom?
A: Yes if undersized or poorly backed. Survey the structure, not only the stainless shine.

Q: Do electric davits need much power?
A: Short bursts, but cable size and battery health matter. Weak banks struggle with repeated lifts.
