Lazy jacks
Lazy jacks on sailing yachts: mainsail control when dropping, chafe risks, survey checks, and FairHelm limits on equating a stack pack with a new sail.
Що це
Lazy jacks are lines from the mast or spreaders to the boom that form a cradle so the mainsail flakes onto the boom when the halyard is eased, often paired with a stack-pack type cover.
Anchor
Stack-pack systems with lazy jacks are common on cruising boats FairHelm sees. Chafe at batten pockets and spreader tips appears when lines stay tight under sail. Adjustment and retracting jacks for long beats matter as much as the canvas bag colour.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: cut webbing, seized clutches on jack lines, and chronic leech chafe are survey items. A tidy boom bag does not prove the mainsail under it is young. Inspect cloth separately from the pack.
Limits
We do not invent a single "correct" jack geometry for every mast. Sailmaker and rigger set-up for that spar rules.
Часті запитання
Q: Do lazy jacks replace a sail cover?
A: No. UV cover still matters. Many systems combine bag and jacks.
Q: Should jacks stay tight while sailing?
A: Often eased or retracted to reduce chafe. Follow the installer's notes.
Q: Is a stack pack proof of a recent refit?
A: No. Bags are added to old sails too.
