Saildrive (sailboat propulsion)
Saildrive units on cruising sailboats: seal service intervals, corrosion, survey haul-out checks and Baltic ownership practice.
Що це
A saildrive is an integrated sailboat propulsion unit where gearbox and lower drive pass through the hull (common on Volvo Penta and some Yanmar installs). FairHelm treats seal age and service invoices as the ownership story — not brochure horsepower.
Survey language
Haul-out checks include diaphragm/seal condition, anode state, oil condition, and alignment clues. Bilge oil or water at the saildrive well is a stop-and-investigate signal. Nordic seasonal boats often defer seal service past recommended intervals.
Buying implications
Ask for the last seal service date and parts invoices. A fresh engine paint job does not refresh the saildrive seal. Budget seal work on older Baltic cruisers when paperwork is missing. FairHelm survey coordination schedules haul-out time for this check, not only for osmosis meters.
Часті запитання
Q: Is a saildrive worse than a shaft?
A: Different failure modes. Seals and galvanic issues matter more than ideology.
Q: Can I extend seal life with anodes alone?
A: Anodes help corrosion control. They do not replace seal service intervals.
Q: Does smooth idle prove the seal is fine?
A: No. Haul-out inspection still rules.
