Trysail

Trysails on sailing yachts: separate storm mainsails, track or lace-on setups, and FairHelm limits on treating deep mainsail reefs as a full trysail substitute.

Що це

A trysail is a small, heavily built storm mainsail usually set on a separate mast track or laced to the mast, sheeted independently of the boom, so the main can be secured when wind and sea exceed reefed-main comfort.

Anchor

Serious offshore Scandinavian boats may carry a bagged trysail and a spare track. Coastal cruisers often stop at third reefs. FairHelm notes empty track covers and missing sheet leads claimed as "storm ready".

FairHelm judgment

FairHelm judgment: deep reefs are useful; a true trysail is a different tool when the boom becomes a hazard. Unused trysails with seized slides help nobody. Ask for a hoist drill story, not only a sail bag photo.

Limits

We do not invent mandatory trysail carriage for every coastal hop. Offshore plans and insurer kit lists differ. Inspect cloth, slides, and sheet blocks before the season.

Часті запитання

Q: Is a trysail the same as a fourth reef?
A: No. A fourth reef shrinks the main on the boom. A trysail is a separate sail, often boomless, on its own track.

Q: Do I need a separate track?
A: Many setups use one. Some lace on. Either way you need clear sheet leads and a practiced crew.

Q: Can I sheet a trysail to the boom?
A: Some older methods did. Modern practice often sheets to the deck clear of the boom. Follow the sailmaker plan for that sail.
