Portlight
Portlights on sailing yachts: seals, frames, and FairHelm survey checks for leaks without inventing brand failure rates.
What this is
A portlight is a cabin window or opening port in the topsides or coachroof that lets light and sometimes ventilation into living spaces.
Anchor
Aluminium and plastic frames both age on Baltic boats. FairHelm looks for crazed lenses, seized opening ports, and water trails on linings below frames.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: "rebedded last year" without photos is weak. Active leaks and soft core around frames are repair scope. Opening ports that will not dog down are safety and weather items.
Limits
We do not invent brand failure percentages. UV, bedding quality, and fastener pattern dominate.
FAQ
Q: Are fixed ports safer than opening ones?
A: Fewer moving seals. Opening ports need latch and gasket checks.
Q: Is condensation inside the lens a structural fail?
A: Often a sealed-unit issue. Still check for deck/frame leaks separately.
Q: Can I ignore small stains under a port?
A: No. Trace whether water is active after rain or hose test.
