Looking for something else?

If you need the same step with Mindhelm, open Yacht Crew - Mindhelm.

If you are already ready to skipper near shore, open Inshore Skipper.

You execute; you do not lead yet

Yacht Crew

  • Crew tasks under the instructor’s guidance
  • Crew step, not coastal skipper

Inshore Skipper

  • Plan, orders and watch are your responsibility
  • You need Yacht Crew or equivalent experience and time on board

Inshore Skipper or Yacht Crew.

How the week is set

Training-week format

  • Seven days and six nights

    Saturday evening to Saturday morning.

  • Up to four participants

    Training-group limit.

  • Accommodation on the yacht

The main format. Your own lodging is also possible.

Why that group limit

So each of you gets enough practice on the water. In a large group a beginner often queues and barely practises working in a crew.

Training week and ISSA certificate

FairHelm week and ISSA certificate

FairHelm training week

  • Practice in a FairHelm training group
  • Tuition in the school’s range

ISSA certificate

  • Association procedure and requirements
  • Separate fee; guide EUR 55
  • Only after the instructor’s decision

Tuition for the training week pays for instruction. Papers are issued separately.

How this week differs from the combined one

This week and the week with Mindhelm

Both weeks share one tuition range per person for the training week. The difference is Mindhelm, not the price. This week leaves room for rest and for training. On the combined week the accent is physical and mental health: developing and restoring cognitive skills. Alcohol is fully banned, including ashore. Mobile-phone use is limited.

Combined week

  • Right now only Vadim Nareyko leads it

Practice on the water

What you practise on the water

  • Sheets

    You work sheets and halyards.

  • Lookout

You keep lookout and clearly pass on what you see.

  • Helm

You stand at the helm in a training setting.

  • Life on board

Roles, order and shared work on the yacht.

Crew role rotation

Crew roles rotate in turn so everyone tries different tasks. This is not skipper rotation: you do not yet take the passage plan or give crew orders on this week.

After this week

Where to look next

The next coastal-command step usually starts with Inshore Skipper. The order of school steps sits on the ISSA map.

What this week does not promise

Three limits

  • This is not the mooring week and not a week of sails practice only.
  • Other schools sometimes write that the ISSA certificate opens yacht charter worldwide. That is their advertising, not a FairHelm promise.
  • The ISSA certificate does not replace national licences if a flag state requires them separately.
