Sail cover
Sail covers on sailing yachts: UV protection for the mainsail, fit checks, survey limits, and FairHelm caution on equating a new cover with a new sail.
מה זה
A sail cover is a fabric sleeve or stack-pack bag that covers the mainsail on the boom (and sometimes staysail bundles) to cut UV and weather exposure when the sail is not set.
Anchor
Acrylic boom covers and integrated lazy-jack packs are common on boats FairHelm sees after Nordic summers. Shrinkage, failed zippers, and chafe at sail ties appear after seasons of wet/dry cycles. Winter covers may be heavier than summer day covers.
FairHelm judgment
FairHelm judgment: a shredded cover is a UV risk flag for the sail beneath. A brand-new cover on tired cloth is a cosmetic flip trick. Open the cover during survey when possible.
Limits
We do not invent UV-hour failure curves. Storage ashore under a full winter wrap changes exposure. Judge the sail cloth, not only the bag.
שאלות נפוצות
Q: Does a new cover mean the mainsail was replaced?
A: No. Covers are cheap relative to sails and often swapped alone.
Q: Is a loose cover harmless?
A: Flapping abrades cloth and hardware. Fit matters.
Q: Are stack packs and classic covers the same?
A: Related job, different hardware. Both need UV integrity.
