D/L

Displacement / length ratio

D/L = (Displacement_lb / 2240) / (0.01 * LWL_ft)^3 = (Displacement_kg / LWL_m^3) * 27.87

Punching into steep head seas, two yachts of identical length behave completely differently. The light hull launches off crests and slams into troughs with jarring shocks that rattle the galley and wear out the crew. The heavier yacht of the same length maintains momentum, carving smoothly through the chop with forgiving inertial motion. The displacement to length ratio (D/L) compares immersed weight against the cube of waterline length. It serves as naval architecture's primary metric to distinguish an ultra-light planning hull from a traditional ocean voyager.

Formula

D/L = (Displacement_lb / 2240) / (0.01 * LWL_ft)^3 = (Displacement_kg / LWL_m^3) * 27.87

Imperial: Displacement in long tons (pounds divided by 2240). LWL in feet divided by 100 before cubing. Omitting the 2240 divisor yields nonsensical numbers in the hundreds of thousands. Metric: Displacement in kilograms divided by LWL in metres cubed, multiplied by 27.87 (equivalent to the imperial form).

Rule of thumb

Cruising monohull benchmark bands: Under 100: Ultra-light racers (Open 40, Pogo, ULDB), blistering off-the-wind speeds but punishing motion upwind and intolerant of heavy gear. 100 to 200: Light cruisers and modern performance hulls (First 31.7, modern unladen family cruisers) offering swift light-air acceleration. 200 to 275: Moderate cruisers (Hallberg-Rassy 36, Najad 390, Bavaria 36, Linjett 40), the classic balance of soft sea-kindly motion and cargo-carrying capacity. 275 to 350: Heavy ocean passage makers (classic Scandic hulls, Contessa 32, HR 352) with easy motion in gale conditions. Above 350: Ultra-heavy double-enders (Colin Archer, Westsail 32, laden Allegro 27).

Limits

Two critical brochure traps: First, substituting length overall (LOA) for waterline length (LWL). On classic hulls with graceful overhangs, using LOA artificially doubles the cubic denominator, falsely making a heavy cruiser appear featherlight. Second, brochure lightship figures exclude fuel, water, ground tackle, and cruising stores. Adding 1.5 to 2 tons to a 7.5-ton boat pushes D/L from 255 to 315, shifting it from moderate to heavy.

Boat examples

  • Hallberg-Rassy 36

Moderate ocean cruiser: D/L around 255 unladen provides sea-kindly motion in North Sea chop, rising to 310 fully provisioned for extended voyaging.

  • Beneteau First 31.7

Light performance cruiser: D/L around 165 enables nimble acceleration and responsive helm, but requires thoughtful gear budgeting to avoid bogging down.

  • Linjett 40

Modern Scandic fast cruiser: D/L around 195 pairs stiff composite construction with comfortable motion for coastal and offshore passages.

History

Formulated by yacht design pioneer Norman Skene in the early 20th century and popularized by C.A. Marchaj and Francis Kinney, D/L provided a standardized benchmark across disparate designs. In the wooden and early heavy-GRP eras, structural requirements kept most cruising yachts between 300 and 400. The advent of modern composites, cored hulls, and finite-element engineering allowed production yards to produce seaworthy hulls under 180.

FAQ

Why does the formula divide pounds by 2240?
The classical imperial formula measures boat weight in English long tons (2240 pounds). Forgetting this divisor produces numbers in the hundreds of thousands.
Why is length cubed in the denominator?
Displaced volume scales with the cube of linear dimensions. Cubing the waterline length matches volume dimensions, keeping D/L a purely dimensionless ratio.
How do cruising supplies affect my boat's actual D/L?
Full tanks, heavy chain, dinghy, outboard, and stores frequently add 15-25% to lightship displacement, pushing a moderate 250 D/L boat past 300.
