Hallberg-Rassy HR 36 vs Najad 390

Last reviewed: · Vadim Nareyko

Ownership study

In a Nordic winter feed the two cards often sit side by side: same shiny varnish, same «proper» centre cockpit, same confident seller. The price gap shows up in the folder, not the photos. One boat has invoices for teak and for the places where standing rigging enters the hull; the other has sunny deck shots. Length barely matters.

Both are Swedish centre-cockpit sloops around eleven to twelve metres. Useful similarity ends there. The HR 36 is usually easier to sell again in northern ports and easier to service when the paperwork is in order. The Najad 390 more often feels denser inside and quieter in the cockpit, with fewer matching ads. The fork is market depth versus how the boat feels to live in, not which logo looks better online.

The HR 36 is a Germán Frers design built 1989–2003 in about 602 hulls. Between early and late series (Mk I hulls 1-256, Mk II 257-602) the transom and aft-cabin volume change. Same name, not one picture for every year. The Najad 390 is Thorwald Karlsson, 1984-1995, about 11.75 by 3.50 metres. How many left the yard is not published; we do not invent a count.

In Stockholm and Gothenburg the HR 36 turns up more often and leaves sooner when work invoices exist. Najads wait longer. Two polished winter listings can still sit far apart in price because one folder proves teak and chainplate work and the other only shows sun on the coachroof.

If a listing calls the HR 36 a ketch or the Najad a deck-saloon performance cruiser, treat it as copy-paste until the hull proves otherwise. Both are ordinary protected centre-cockpit sloops. Do not credit the Najad 390 to Olle Enderlein or years 1997-2005; that is a different boat story.

On the hardstand use one shared list for both. Teak decks: soft spots after freeze seasons are real; varnish colour does not cancel them. Where standing-rigging wires enter the hull, look for water and rust trails. Walk a moisture meter around the coachroof. Wire age needs an invoice, not a handshake story. Soft-cover winter storage history matters too. On the HR 36 do not mix Mk I and Mk II without reading the transom. Under sail both feel like protected cruisers of their size; the split usually appears on the hardstand and in the refit quote. Sea-trial both before deposit if you can.

The annual ownership band on this page is berth, insurance, haul-out, and reserves for deck and rigging. Full teak replacement, osmosis, or a major engine sit outside that band. Run EUR with region in the ownership-cost tool; do not treat the two SEK columns below as twin «truths».

Limit: FairHelm does not promise a purchase price or a clean survey. Laminate state, teak extent, and systems age stay unknown until the boat is hauled. This text does not replace a sea trial or a surveyor.

When to pick which

HR 36

Lean HR 36 when exiting later matters more: northern buyers know the yard, more ads usually sit in the pool, and parts and service are easier to find. Before deposit it is worth checking early versus late series on the transom and hull number, and whether teak and standing-rigging invoices exist, not only a new cockpit screen.

Najad 390

Lean Najad 390 when denser joinery and a quieter cockpit matter more and you can wait longer for a matching card. Before deposit: build years 1984-1995 and designer Karlsson. If the text says Enderlein or late-1990s years (1997-2005), you are not looking at this boat. On the hardstand score coachroof moisture.

FairHelm planning ranges for routine Baltic ownership (Sweden / northern ports), not a quote for your marina and not twin truths in a compare row. The band usually covers berth, winter, insurance, haul-out, and reserves; full teak, osmosis, or a major engine often do not. Condition usually costs more than the badge.
