Offshore Skipper — what to expect on an expedition week

Night watches, fatigue, Baltic passages and preparation for ISSA Offshore — drawn from FairHelm’s published Offshore Skipper course, not brochure fiction.

If you already sleep well after a coastal day-skipper week, this course is a different week. The Offshore Skipper programme at FairHelm is for skippers who command confidently near shore and want to test night watches, fatigue and offshore autonomy on a real passage. What follows is from our Offshore Skipper course page - not invented drama, not a guaranteed certificate outcome.

Short answer: expedition week with night passages; Inshore (or equivalent) first; example Baltic route; ~€1,500 tuition; ISSA fees separate; weather may rewrite the plan.

In short

  • For: coastal skippers ready for night watches and sleep deficit - not first command.
  • Format: 7 days / 6 nights · max 4 · watches of 2 + instructor.
  • Example route: Nynäshamn (SE) → Gotland (Visby) - dates vary; see schedule.
  • Money: ~€1,500 tuition; travel, food, insurance and ISSA issue fees not included.
  • Mindset: resilience on the distance, not heroics.

Who this course is for

From the course overview:

  • You already skipper in coastal waters and want offshore-mode experience.
  • You are ready for night watches, sleep deficit and decision-making at sea.
  • You have completed Inshore Skipper (ISSA or equivalent) plus confirmed offshore-ready experience.

This is not a first command course. If you have not led a crew through coastal navigation and marina manoeuvres, start with Yacht Crew and Inshore Skipper.

Mindhelm angle, briefly: offshore weeks are a boundary test - what you can still decide clearly when tired. Ego that "I will sleep when we arrive" is how people invent risk. Knowing when to rest the watch is part of the skill.

Example route and dates

The course page lists an example programme (actual dates vary - check schedule):

  • Dates/route (example): 1-7 August 2026, Nynäshamn (SE) → Gotland (Visby); or see schedule for current dates.
  • Day 0: Briefing, watch formation, first night passage (e.g. ~50 nm)
  • Days 1-2: Rest, theory (offshore nav, fatigue, night decisions); second night passage; approach to Visby
  • Days 3-4: Visby / Gotland - rest and integration; reflection sessions
  • Days 5-6: Return to Nynäshamn (route by weather); final debrief, certificates

Weather routing may change the plan - that is part of offshore training.

Cost and what is included

Published on the course page (2026):

  • Cost: about €1,500 per person (by dates and route)
  • Included: participation, boat, instruction
  • Not included: travel to start point, food, transfer, tickets, personal medication, insurance, personal expenses. Accommodation may be on board or arranged separately. Sport insurance during training is recommended.

Certificate issue follows ISSA's process and fees - separate from tuition. See certificates.

How to prepare

  1. Log recent miles as skipper - coastal passages with crew decisions, not only guest days.
  2. Refresh coastal nav - chart work, weather routing, MOB and reefing drills.
  3. Pack for fatigue - see our yacht course packing checklist; offshore weeks need reliable layers and headtorch / red-light discipline.
  4. Read the ISSA path - ISSA certification path explains how offshore fits after inshore.

Places are limited; selection by level and motivation. Contact us with your experience log - we will discuss format and dates honestly, including if this week is too early.
