Ideal Inshore training-week plan

A guide week - not every group’s calendar. Weather and progress move the days. A certificate is still earned on the water.

This is the ideal strip we use as a teaching guide for Inshore. It is not a weather promise and not a fixed timetable for every crew. Days swap when a manoeuvre must be repeated or the waters force another order. Neighbour pages: daily skills, why a week does not guarantee a certificate. Instructors on the teach path use the same strip as a shared picture - not as a script that ignores the sea.

Day by day (guide)

Day 1 - Boat, roles, safety

Walk the yacht: systems you must find without asking twice. Lifejackets, MOB words, fire, gas. First short berthing at the quay under watch. Goal: everyone knows where they stand and who speaks.

Day 2 - Under power and quay work

Approaches, fenders, lines, abort and go around. Deck commands in plain language. Goal: controlled speed and a second attempt without shame.

Day 3 - Sails

Hoist, drop, points of sail, tacks when the crew is calm. In light air you still train sails at the berth and safety roles. Goal: sail work without chaos on the sheet.

Day 4 - Skipper watch

You lead a known exit: plan, brief, lookout, simple decisions. The instructor talks less. Goal: responsibility shows when the coach is quieter.

Day 5 - Anchor, tight spaces, coastal night

Anchor set and weigh when the waters allow. Tight marina work, another yacht nearby. When weather and waters allow - a coastal night watch: hand over and take a shift in the dark, a short night run along the coast, or overnight at anchor. That belongs to Inshore, not a jump into Offshore. Goal: judgment under traffic and habit of night near shore.

Day 6 - Weak spots and progress

Repeat what failed. Action-plan items get attempts. Feedback must show in the next run. Goal: progress visible, not attendance.

Day 7+ - Formal check if needed

Theory, practice, or combined - only if the instructor chooses it from the week. Not “card day by default.” See three check formats.

Weather and the waters

Calm - berthing under power, lines, sails up/down, safety drill. Progress continues.
Not enough manoeuvres - shift repeats; the week must still move forward.
Storm - the honest stop when it is unsafe. Shore, debrief, dockside if safe. Final call: instructor.

If the certificate is not issued

Action plan, extra practice, retake after practice, or a narrow skills weekend - spelled out in the school-week article.
