Gooseneck

Gooseneck fittings on sailing yachts: boom-to-mast hinge wear, survey play checks, and FairHelm limits on photo-only clearance claims.

Co to jest

A gooseneck is the hinged fitting that attaches the boom to the mast so the boom can swing and, on many boats, slide or reef vertically on a track.

Anchor

Cruising boats FairHelm meets often use aluminium cast or fabricated goosenecks with stainless pins. Wear shows as oval pin holes, seized toggles, and cracks in castings after years of vang and preventer loads.

FairHelm judgment

FairHelm judgment: measurable play, cracked castings, and seized reef slides are survey items. A boom that "looks attached" in a listing photo is not a clearance check. Combine with vang and boom bale inspection.

Limits

We do not invent millimetre play limits for every spar maker. Feel and gauge belong to the surveyor or rigger on that spar.

Najczęściej zadawane pytania

Q: Is gooseneck play ever normal?
A: Slight working clearance can exist. Clunking play and oval holes are not "normal wear" to ignore.

Q: Does a rigid vang replace gooseneck care?
A: No. It can increase loads. The hinge still needs checks.

Q: Can I grease and forget?
A: Lubrication helps. It does not heal cracked castings or worn pins.
