ISSA progression map

Inshore and Offshore share one digit in the table: seven days, no more than four people. That is not one week with night watches bolted on. Inshore: seven or fourteen days of daytime command, after crew and real time on board. Offshore: a separate seven-day expedition where night and distance are already part of the work. Entry differs: solid coastal command first, then experience that fits that distance.

First row is not that mix-up. Crew: you execute, sheets and helm under instruction. Beginners welcome; no prior certificate. Format: about seven days on board, max four. The word about is deliberate: this is not a booked date. Issue fees are not on this map: they live on the certificates page and can change.

Beside the ladder

Radio sits beside the ladder, not on it. Mooring and sail-trim weeks do not replace coastal command. Instructor comes after command is already there.

What this map does not promise

The association describes the same names differently. After crew it opens inland waters and coastal. This map has no inland step. For coastal it asks one sailing trip, age over 16, and a radio certificate; the school asks crew or equivalent plus time on board. For offshore the ISSA page asks 28 days at sea as skipper or watch leader, at least two passages and two areas, age over 18, radio and first aid. Their duration is 7-14 days by experience. Certificate limit: up to 120 nautical miles from shore, about 222 kilometres, including heavy weather, day and night. Next for them is Master of Yacht. Those sea days, that range, and that step are not on the school card. They are not pasted here. Ads that put beginners on coastal without experience do not transfer. A short jump with weak command is not sold. The association paper does not replace national licences if a flag state requires them. The map does not book a slot.

Common questions

Can I start at Inshore without Yacht Crew?
Inshore expects Yacht Crew (ISSA or equivalent) plus real time on board. If you already hold a matching crew credential and miles, ask us. We do not sell a short path with weak coastal command.
Where does VHF fit?
Beside the ladder. Yacht Crew and Inshore teach the boat; VHF teaches the radio. Many charter contracts require SRC before handover. Start with the free listen-and-decode track if you want a taste first.
Is FairHelm completion the same as an ISSA certificate?
No. After the course: a FairHelm completion paper. The official ISSA certificate is issued by ISSA when you meet their requirements (often with an examiner). Fees separate: see certificates.
Why do coastal and offshore both show a seven?
Not one week with night bolted on. Coastal: daytime command (7 or 14 days). Offshore: a separate seven-day expedition with night work and a different entry.
